7-29-10 WACH Fox Internship Journal

Today was my last day at my internship with WACH Fox News. I truly learned and gained alot of information that will be useful to my career. It was kind of sad to leave the internship but I was happy that I met all of those wonderful individuals. Ashley Norris made me a internship cookie cake to celebrate my completion of interning at WACH Fox. All day I tried to cram in every extra piece of information that I knew would be useful to me. I turned in my WACH Fox Internship Resume' Portfolio to my two managers. I can can humbly say that my hard work putting together that resume' portfolio was well worth it. The last thing I did at my intership was practicing Photoshop and assisting with things that needed to be done around the station. I will always remember interning at the wonderful WACH Fox News Station in Columbia South Carolina.

7-28-10 WACH Fox Journal

When I first got to the internship today, the first thing I did was go straight the the editing room. I was so excited to edit the "Hot Spots in the Midlands" resturant segment I made up. Being a Mass Communications major and taking those Television Production classes definatly made things much easier for me to edit my work. It felt so good to finish editing and to see the outcome of my work. When I first started interning here at WACH Fox I had the privilege of having Ms. Jarrita Patterson record me doing a stand-up for a news story, and Mr. Micheal Coleman record me doing a mock anchor broadcast. And to top things all off today Mr. Henry Rothenberg (Weatherman) recorded me doing a weather forecast. He encouraged me and that made me feel very comfortable. I will always remember him for that. I am blessed that they all recorded me and today I had the chance to make a Resume' Reel and put all of my work at this internship on that Reel.

I will always remember today in my WACH Fox internship experience. I wanted to leave this internship with visual production proof that I interned at this wonderful station. I took the initiative to go out and shoot my a personal resturant segment and I named it "Hot Spots in the Midlands." I had so much fun shooting the footage and interviewing the resturant individuals. The name of the resturant is called the Hampton Street Cafe' which is located at the University of South Carolina. Shooting the footage was fun but editing it was even more fun. Having the chance to put together my ideas on the Avid software was amazing. I will always remember today. After I completed capturing the resturant footage I came back to the station and assisted Promotions worker Andre Bellamy with a production. I assisted him by setting up the lights and props. That was really fun.

7-26-10 WACH Fox Journal

All I can say is that today I gained so much knowledge that is so helpful to my career. But before I get into that I'm going to explian my morning. I started off as usual by assisting the Morning News Producer. While doing that I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting District 2 Senate candidate Brian Newman. I have to say that this internship is so beneficial because I get to meet so many great people. When the morning show was over I went on a field assignment with News Anchor Janet Parker. We covered the Grand Opening of a Cici's Resturant in District 2. There is talk about the resturant being built in the mist of so much debt. The city of Columbia is $200,000,000 is debt and to top it all off, the resturant was built with citizens tax dollars. Some citizens feel that another route should have been taken to get the building built instead of tax dollars. We went to a District 2 citizen home to get her opinion on the situation and she was not pleased because now citizens in the area will recieve a 2% raise in the water and sewage bill to make up for the expenses. Getting informed on what's going on in the community is very beneficial by interning here. After the shoot was over I came back to the station and Andre' Bellamy in the Promotions Department gave me the opportunity to practice on the Photoshop software. That is the tool that I gained so much knowledge from that will help me in my career. That software is very important in my career.

7-22-10 WACH Fox Journal

Today at WACH Fox I can say that I got a chance to get my hands involved with alot of new things I enjoyed. Today I helped the Promotions department put together the set for the Senior Connections Television Show. I found it really fun to put together a set that viewers will be viewing. It feels really good to see the outcome of hard work that was put together for a television set. After that I had the wonderful opportunity to go on a field assignment with Production Employee Andre Bellamy to shoot a segment on the dangers of not giving your pets enough water in hot weather. I assisted Andre on the shoot where it took place at Finnley Park. That is such a beautiful park. The talent who did the segment was Evening Weather Meterologist Justin Kier. When the shoot was over for the segment Andre took time out of his busy schedule to show me a tutoring program for the Photoshop software. I am so thankful that he presented to me the chance to learn a tool that I will need in my career.

My experience today was so amazing. It started off with me assisting the Morning News Producer at WACH Fox. I was a runner for him and I handed out the rundowns and scripts for the news anchors, weather man, director, and producer. After that I went on a field assignment with Morning News Anchor Janet Parker. We were scheduled to go to Fort Jackson Military Branch in Columbia South Carolina to gather a story about a soldier who saved the life of another military soldier who had an seizure while in class. When we got to the sight to capture the footage and get the interview, we realized that there was a mix up in communication because another hero soilder was ready to do an interview for another situation that happened. So after approval from the WACH Fox station manager to do the new story, we found that the new story had to do with another military hero. We had the pleasure of interviewing Staff Sargent Mercedes Amaro who recieved the Soldier's Medal which is the highest military medal. He recieved that medal because he saved three lives at a basic training sight. The incident happend on July 31st 2009 at a grenade training sight. Sargent Amaro blocked a grenade from hitting the individual who threw it incorrectly and two others on the ground. He said the trainee was very nervous and when he noticed her angle of how it was about to be thrown he then blocked it quickly and then jumped on top of her to protect her from the granade impact. It was an honor to meet a true hero. He was very humble and that made his character shine through. After the interview, myself and Janet captured footage of the Fort Jackson Military Base and saw the location of where the incident happened. It was so amazing to see those hard working men and women working hard to prepare to serve our country. I had so much fun today on this field assignment.

At my internship today I learned that everyone has to start some where. Today I asked to do a mock anchor broadcast so I can put it into my internship portfolio. One thing I should have done was to practice the script I was saying so I could be somewhat fimilar with information. When I began I was alright but after reaching the third story I stumbled and got alittle nervous. I now see why anchors come in to work aliitle early so they can read over the script and prepare. Even though I tried my best I kind of felt alittle embarrassed but that was because of the nerves. I love the fact that the anchors at WACH Fox encouraged me an told me that anchors get better as they practice and do it for a long time. They also addmitted to me that when they first started they kind of stumbled but they got better over time. I truly admire them for being so encouraging and honest to me. That is what it is all about. Later that day I met up with Prodction/Promotions employee Jason Shrout. I was so happy that I had the chance to watch him edit a cooking segment he directed. Watching him just made my passion for creating and editing just more strong. I watched his technique and learned alot from him.

Today at WACH Fox I experienced one of the most memorable assignments thus far. In my career I want to own an Advertising, Graphic Design, and Film Agency and commercials fall under the that occupation. I would have never guessed that today I would have the chance to witness a production shoot that ties right in to my career occupation. Today I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Jason Shrout from the Production/Promotions Department. After talking to him about his job desciption he then told me he was about to go on a shoot for a "United Auto Sales" infomercial. I see those programs all the time on television and to just have the chance to assist him on the shoot was amazing. To top things all off, the director and the boom assistant gave me the chance to actually help shoot some car exterior and interior shots for the commercial. After that the director gave me another assignment and that was to keep the stop watch so the commercial would not be to long or to short. I observed everything and took notes on how the camera operator controlled the camera. Today I stayed at the internship an extra hour and a half but it was reallt worth it.

7-15-10 WACH Fox Journal

Today at WACH Fox was full of learning experiences for me. One of the first things I did was learned the job of being a script and rundown sheet runner. That job consisted of me assisting Mr. Michael Patterson (News Producer) by organizing and passing out the rundown layout sheets and scripts for the lead anchors, weather man, news director, and producer. It was really fun to have the chance to pass out those materials in between breaks. I love assisting the News Producer. After the WACH Fox Good Day Morning Show was over I personally decided to to practice setting up a tripod and camera. I took everything apart from scratch and set the two up. It really helped me because when I now go out on field assignments with reporters I will be able to quickly set up the camera and tripod if we are in a rush to set up. Later that day I had a good talk with News Anchor Mr. Darryl Hood and Evening News Director/Technical Director Mr. Christopher Bacote. They gave me some helpful words that I will always remember. This at WACH Fox even though I did not go out on a field assignment, I still gained so much postive information that made up for that. I will always remember them for giving me such useful information and truly careing.

Today at my internship I can say that I enjoyed myself. When I arrived at the studio at 5:30am I got right to work. I observed News Producer Michael Patterson as he did his work. I noticed that he typed the scripts for the anchors to read on the telepromter. I found it so amazing that while the show was live he managed to type the proper word in such a rushed time. On top of that he had to print the script he typing and give it to the anchors and Weather Man. I use to always wonder, why do the anchors sometimes look down at paper that is on the desk but at this internship I truly unserstand that it very necessary to have those scripts and rundowns on their desk. The papers are used as a guide to keep the anchors on track and for a back up purposes if the telepromter goes out. Later that day I went on a field assignment with Ms. Jarrita Patterson who is such an amazing news reporter. We did a story on the new USC research library that is putting South Carollina on the map. The library is called "The Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library." The Library consist of a Rare Books and Special Collections Department, a South Carolina Political Collections Department, and a Digital Collection Department. Working at this internship is so beneficial because the media had the opportunity to be the first to view the inside of the high-tech building. At the library I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing the first and original King James New Testament Bible that was written centries ago. When I saw the Bible I was so amazed. There were other histroical items there but the Bible stood out to me. I would encourage everyone to take a visit to the USC "Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library." I enjoyed this field assisgnment.

7-13-10 WACH Fox Journal

My experience at my internship today was good. I got alot accomplished and I learned alot. I sat down with Weather Man Mr. Henry and I asked him some questions that I was very curious about. He was so easy to talk to and he said he was not going to leave work until I asked every question I had for him. We discussed weather definitions and termonology that I wanted to know more about. After my conversation with Mr. Henry I had the pleasure to go out on a field assignment with Anchor and Reporter Mr. Adam Pinsker. He is so nice and down to earth. I assisted Mr. Pinsker on the shoot where we went to the Midlands Regional Mayors' Meeting. The meeting was held by Columbia Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin and other mayors' from around the region attended. The meeting was held to discuss how all the local Mayors' should come together and come up with ideas on how to make a good change in the community and the economy locally. I was so honored to take a picture with the Mayor of Columbia and to be in the presence of such accomplished men and women who hold the title of being Mayors' in their designated areas. Being an intern with WACH Fox 57 has given me the chance to meet other news media individuals from other news stations. I met WLTX News 19 Anchor Jerome Collins. Being in this industry is a sure way to meet such influential individuals. After the Mayors' meeting myself and Mr. Pinsker went to a local business called the "Gentleman's Closet" to get the owners opinion on how they feel about the local government and what are their views on the local government. When we got back to the station Mr. Pinsker showed me how to upload the footage we captured onto the Avid. I know that the way WACH Fox upload footage is way different than the way we do it at my school, so I am so thankful he took the time to show me.

7-8-10 WACH Fox Journal

I got so much accomplished today . I made up my mid that I wanted my internship experience to be shared on a blog. Today I officially created my own personal blog. I had a few entries to catch up on that I had publish as my blog, but just look at the title of each blog post and the actutal day of my internship experience will be labled on the title of every entry. On today I also had the opportunity to go on a field assignment with Ms. Jarrita Patterson. We had the chance to do a story on the Richland County planning Commision where it was a meeting where some District 2 Citizens did not want an old Hotel building to be transformed into a Benedict College dorm room. Some of those citizens were even Benedict College Alunmi but they still did not feel comfortable with the plan of turning that building into a dorm room. I learn so much from this internship. I had the chance to learn from Morning Technical Director, Michael Coleman on how WACH Fox uses Avid Newscutter. I learned that a way this station gets their national footage is through a Digital Routing System. It just feeds national news information from ipump and cnn news sources to the WACH Fox 57 routing system. It is very cool. Also I learned that this station uses P2 Cards to record their field footage. I like the fact that when field reporters go out and gather footage, they can rewind their P2 card (It stores the footage) and they can see how their shots came out. It is so different from how my school records footage. We use tapes to record our footage. I can say that I learned something new today.

7-7-10 WACH Fox Journal

I had so much fun today. I experienced, learned alot, and met so many influential people. I had the wonderful priviledge of watching a live broadcast of WACH Fox 57 by witnessing the "Good day Morning Show." On top of that during the break I was invited to sit on the studio set. The fact that I had the chance to even sit on a actual television set meant alot to me. After that I went on assignment with Ms. Jarrita Patterson to gather information about a story. The package was about the candidates who are running for the Columbia City Council seat. We interviewed potential voters and two of the eight candidates who are competing. We spoke with candidate Harold Puff Howard and candidate Joshua Stroman. This internship has given me so many opportunities to meet people and gain so much knowledge. To top it all off, I had the opportunity to broadcast on the story and that experience was one that I will always remember. I learned about the proper ways to hold a microphone and to be honest, me learning the proper way to hold me mic made me feel more comfortable in speaking on camera.

Today was very interesting.Trying to get to my internship at WACh Fox 57 was a task by itself. Today was my first day and I was scheduled to meet with the internship director Mr. Barkley. I planned to be at the station earlier but my transportation failed me during the time I was suppose to have the interview for my first day. I thank God because after I prayed the Lord worked out the transportation so I could make my first day that morning. One the first day I had the chance to meet news anchors that I see on WACH Fox 57 and I had the opportunity to shoot footage for a package with Ms. Katie Williams. I assisted Ms. Williams and we had a great time shooting footage. We did an interview with U.S Senate candidate Tom Clements. He is one of the representatives of the Green Party. He stated that he was concerned about all that is going on in Washington DC. He is truly an economic friendly individual and going green is how he likes to live his lifestyle. For my first sy I truly learned alot and met some amazing individuals.
